Is paying for Proton services worth it?
For those who don't know, Proton is a company that is basically Google, but more privacy friendly. It offers services such as Mail, Drive, VPN, a password manager, and more.
But is it worth paying for the paid plans?
Here's the short version: Yes*.
Here's the long version: Yes, but only if privacy actually matters to you. (which in this day and age, it really should)
Here are the pros:
- Great UI and stability
- Privacy with stuff like email aliases, E2EE encrypted email, and (kinda the whole point)
- Big enough to have a active community which can help you troubleshoot
- A FREE 20$ in credits, which can carry you a long way with some of their cheaper services (like Proton VPN) (if you sign up for a paid plan)
- Actual audits proving it's private
- It's open source!
Aaaand now for the cons.
1, Kinda slow Drive speeds (though since I use Drive for backups, it doesn't really matter to me) - Some services don't work with the email aliases.
- Proton Drive client for Linux isn't out just yet, but Proton says it'll come out at around the end of this year
Aside from that, I can't think of any more cons!
Overall, it's a great group of services, and I'll give it a 9/10.
